The former Residence of Mr. Bao Yugang’s

The former residence of Mr. Bao Yugang’s is located in the new rear house of Baoxin Village, Zhuangshi County, Zhenhai District. It is the place where Mr. Bao Yugang, the “World Shipping Magnate” was born. Mr. Bao Yugang was the giant of commerce and finance. He was once the vice chairman of Drafting Committee for the Basic Law of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and the consultant of coordination team of construction and development of Ningbo city under the governance of the state council.

 The new rear house has high walls and deep courtyards. It is a five two-storey tile-roofed house facing the south composed of five two-lane masonry-timber structure rooms, which are typical residences in the south. Outside the entrance on the eastern side is the vast field with interlaced footpaths and rivers. Zhongbao village was originally called Heng River Batardeau as the ancestors once built the batardeau on the bank of Heng River to store water for the village.

According to the recordation in Bao’s Genealogy of Heng River Batardeau collected by Tianyi Attic, Bao’s brothers and sisters was the 29the generation of the offspring of Bao Zheng, a famous judge in Northern Song Dynasty. During the late period of Northern Song Dynasty, Bao’s ancestors traveled to Lin An along with King Gaozong of Northern Song Dynasty. The subsequent generations of offspring came from Lin An to Zhenhai (called Dinghai then) and had been living in Heng River Batardeau from ever since. Bao Yugang’s father, Bao Zhaolong and his mother Chen Saiqin had three sons and four daughters. Bao’s brothers and sisters were all born and brought up in the new rear house. It was here that Mr. Bao Yugang married his wife, Huang Xiuying.

Mr. Bao Yugang had once been back to his hometown for 6 times during the period from 1984 to 1989. The new rear house was rebuilt twice. In 1989, Zhenhai District government appropriated funds to refit two rooms at the western sides as the exhibition room for Mr. Bao’s former residence and created the full-body bronze statue for Mr. Bao Zhaolong and marble monument with inscriptions. In the exhibition rooms, there are pictures of Mr. Bao Yugang indicating some historic events, including those of Mr. Bao Yugang was received by the national leaders such as Deng Xiaoping and Li Peng as well as he funded the establishment of Beijing Zhaolong Hotel, Zhaolong Liberary of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Ningbo University.
