In the afternoon of September 13, the news channel of Live News on CCTV-13 broadcasted a piece of news titled Typhoon “Chanthu” is approaching the coast of East China, bringing heavy rainfall; multi-measures have been taken for flood control, covering the reinforcement of seawall gate along the river to prevent seawater backflow and the flood control and drainage measures in the Xiepu Sluice Station. The radio channel of News in Progress with the China National Radio broadcasted a relevant piece of news titled Going all out for flood control and typhoon disaster prevention; Xiepu Sluice Station’s well prepared.

Zhenhai is located at the estuary of the Yongjiang River and can be easily affected by tides. In recent days, the working staff has implemented maintenance measures such as re-oiling and sealing strips on all seawall gates along the river to ensure normal operation of these gates during the typhoon period. They also commissioned the drainage pump station and various emergency equipment, filled flood control sandbags and distributed them to communities in need. Meanwhile, drawing on the experience of coping with the high-level tide of the Yongjiang River caused by the Typhoon “In-Fa”, Zhenhai has installed flood control baffles at 3 open seawall mouths along the Yanjiang Road, and organized emergency teams to patrol at night on September 12 to reduce the impact of seawater backflow.

The Xiepu Sluice Station is a major part of the “6+1” Project for flood control of the Yaojiang River and Fenghuajiang River Basin, and a livelihood project to improve the flood control and disaster reduction capacity of the Zhenhai District and to improve the ecological water environment.

In order to prevent typhoon disasters, the Xiepu Sluice Station makes overall arrangement, maintains and tries to run the electromechanical, communication, network and other related equipment and facilities of the main engine of the pump station in advance, so as to ensure a normal, stable and efficient operation of the main engine of the pump station and play the role for flood control and drainage.

It’s mentioned in the news broadcasted by the CCTV and CNR that the working staff of the Xiepu Sluice Station had been grasping the crucial period before the landing of the typhoon, doing a good job in river network pre-drainage and pre-discharge, thus having controlled the inland river network at a low water level. From September 10 to 11 a.m., September 12, four offshore sluice stations drained a total of 19.15 million cubic meters of water, out of which 9.3 million cubic meters of water were drained through the Xiepu Sluice Station.
